On the Grid

Documenting a growing Los Angeles community through photography.

verynice was asked to curate the Arts District area of Downtown Los Angeles for
Hyperakt‘s awesome side project, On the Grid. Our Director of Design Operations, Kate, curated 30 of her favorite places in our home base, having moved to the Arts District in 2012.

Something I was not expecting from taking on this project was how out of my comfort zone I found myself. I had my haunts, but for the sake of collecting enough places, I ventured into places I’d never even heard of! Most places didn’t even question the woman taking photos of their store; some even posed for the camera. I’m happy to share these spots with the anyone who stumbles upon On the Grid: Arts District; there’s so many places I couldn’t even get to!

Creating quite the spreadsheet, we spent almost two months planning, visiting and photographing coffee shops, restaurants, shops and everything in between to feature on the map. Writing up snappy copy was a first, but having some context for the photos is essential to the project. With minimal photo editing, the images captured and curated for On the Grid are what I feel really show the Arts District at its best.
